Why do you want to be a tutor?
- I love children and adolescents, and I love teaching. I really enjoy helping a frustrated child solve a problem or learn something they felt was impossible for them to learn; the look on their faces when they feel like they actually achieved something is priceless. For this, I think it's a very rewarding job, and on top of that, I have had a lot of fun with it in the past, and would really like to continue passing my knowledge onto others.
Why should a student pick you?
- I'm friendly, outgoing, and do a good job of making people feel comfortable around me. I am encouraging, helpful, and patient, and am willing to go at the pace of a student. I have a degree in psychology, with a specialization in school psychology, so I have a great deal of expertise in working with students with problems in school, and believe that I can do well with helping a student succeed, even when he or she does not believe it.
Personal Statement:
- I began tutoring about 5 years ago through The Princeton Review, and later switched to StudySmart, Inc., which is an organization much like yours. I realized that I like working with organizations that provide only one-on-one tutoring because I feel that in doing that, you really get to know the individual, his/her strengths and weaknesses, and then can tailor the tutoring to build on these. The children who are signed up for tutoring know that they have some academic difficulties, and often, this knowledge brings down self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy ensue. In providing individualized tutoring, I like to be the person who not only helps the student achieve better results in the school arena, but more importantly, I love being the person who can help the student change their self-concepts enough to realize that though they may be a slow learner in some ways, they have a lot of other strengths which can be built upon.
